Getting To Know You + Me: What Is Your Greatest Strength?

Getting To Know You + Me: Join the journey of personal growth + getting to know others.

This series is about getting to know you + me.  It’s a reflection of sorts to help you get to know yourself better (and I’m going to share, too!)  When we know ourselves better, it’s easier for others to know us, too, and that creates stronger bonds + connections.  As a result, we feel happier.

Here’s how it works:  I’ll be posting a question here on the blog and you can share your answer in the comments below or on Facebook, Instagram or Google+ using the hashtag #gettingtoknowyouandme .  The cool part is that you can use the hashtag to find others on the same journey.  Who knows?  You may make a new friend.

Getting To Know You + Me: A series on connecting more with ourselves + others.

This is one of the typical interview questions that I used to cringe at trying to answer because I had a hard time figuring out how to do it without feeling like I was bragging.  But then I heard the question rephrased to: What is your greatest strength that people compliment you on a lot?  That totally put it in a new perspective for me and took the braggy pressure off.

So.  I’m pretty sure my greatest strength (that people often comment on) is how I can see the bright side to any situation.  Call it a Polly Anna attitude or delusion, but I can see the good in everything and I think that has made all of the difference in living a full, happy life.  My mom had this wonderful viewpoint too + I’m so grateful it rubbed off on me!

But let’s be clear: I am definitely not immune to getting annoyed like everyone else, it’s just not usually my first reaction.  I try to see the silver lining in each moment and that allows me to move on from difficult situations a LOT faster than if I gave in to the gloom + doom.

So what about you?  What’s your greatest strength that others often compliment you on?  This trait is a blessing + catalyst in your life, so don’t downplay it!

Getting To Know You + Me: What Part Of Your Life Do You Want To Change The Most?

GTKYM Change your life

As soon as I thought of this question, I knew my answer: get more organized.  I feel like I’m always playing catch up by trying to implement the latest organizational technique, but none of them stick!  I feel like if I could get a system going that works for me and stick to it, I’d be less stressed and have more free time;  Then I won’t be wasting time worrying about what I have to do.  I have found that the simpler something is, the more I am prone to stick with it.  I need to explore that a little deeper.

For example: I just discovered Google Keep.  This application is ridiculously simple–just a bunch of tiles that you can move around containing lists of whatever you want.  It’s total genius for me because I can make a grocery list, favorite songs to listen to, punch list for the week, etc.  And even better?  I can access it on my phone and my laptop.  Since it’s synced through google, all I have to do is type in the info I want and everything is automatically saved.  Total Score.

Now with that said, that’s only a small part of my life that helps me get a tad bit more organized.  What I really need help with is figuring out a way to keep my car clean (it’s a total pig sty), how to change my clothes management system so they don’t pile up on my dresser and ottoman, figure out a way to get more blog posts in my back up arsenal,  I could go on and on… But I have a feeling if I could get some of the big stuff into an easy-to-use system, the smaller things would fall into place.

Do you have a system that keeps you organized and your life humming along like a finely tuned instrument?  Please tell me in the comments below– I need to know about it!

Getting To Know You + Me: Can You Be Spontaneous?

Getting To Know You + Me

Getting To Know You + Me

It seems like being spontaneous is such a whimsical, sexy trait.  And I feel like part of me is capable of being spontaneous at times.  But for reals?  I’m a planner.

I LOVE to plan–I love to think a given situation out, work on each detail so I can thwart any complications before they come up.  I find that when I do this, I am more relaxed and can enjoy each moment more.  I don’t have to worry about a lot of snafus (other than the inevitable ones you can’t control no matter what.)

I’ve realized spontaneity works best for me when I don’t have time to think about it.  I guess that’s what spontaneity is #duh, but if it’s sprung on me, I can go along like a champ.  It’s fun to let go of control and ride the wave of a new plan when my gut says go.  Because it’s all about trusting my gut–I can be spontaneous when it feels right but if the feels right part isn’t there, I can’t jump on that train.

What about you?  Are you a hard core planner too, or can you often throw caution to the wind?

Getting To Know You + Me Change

My life is pretty great right now, but let’s face it people– there’s always room for improvement.  And Lord knows I could use a little help in a few areas, especially in the organization arena.  That’s something that I’d like to change the most in my life right now.

I’m pretty organized in my head, like I can remember a what drawer I put a certain shirt in last week, but it’s getting the shirt into the actual drawer part that trips me up.  Yup, I’m one of those messy people.

I remember the first time my boss walked by my car after work–after getting a peek inside, he started hysterically laughing and pointing.  There were some canvases I was working on, my gym bag, paints strewn across the floor, a couple of books, various candy wrappers, I could go on and on.  He couldn’t believe that I was hiding such a sloppy side of myself so well from the world!  I don’t look like I’d be a messy person, but man, I can let things go like the best of them.  And you know what?  Him laughing at me like that was pretty embarrassing, but I’m actually kind of ok with that sloppy side of me.

That is, until it gets in the way of what I want to do, and then it drives me crazy.  And lately I’ve noticed my lack of organization + neatness is getting in the way of me being productive with my art.  I waste a lot of time searching for things I want to use in my studio that could very easily be at my fingertips if I were more organized.  Ugh.

So there you have it, I’d like to change being sloppy into being more organized.  I struggle with it–is it just a part of who I am?  Or am I being lazy?  I know when something keeps showing up and I always have the same reaction (annoyance, want to get rid of it, change it, etc) it’s time to take a deeper look.

I’m going to try to make getting more organized a priority this year.  We’ll see how it goes.  What are you looking to change in your life?

Getting To Know You + Me: What Are You Most Grateful For Everyday And Why?

Getting To Know You + Me grateful

There are so many things I am grateful for–birds in my backyard, peanut butter and rhubarb jelly sandwiches, my nieces and their silly jokes, a clear sky when I can see all of the stars, a sex and the city marathon when I’m on the elliptical at the gym, dark chocolate + ginger, friends who just listen and let me babble, homemade pizza…I could go on and on.

But I’d have to say the thing I’m most grateful for in my life is my health.

Back in 2008 I went on a trip of a lifetime, touring around India and Nepal.  It was a 3 week trip to see the beautiful cities of Northern India and then cross over into the amazing country of Nepal.  When I left home, I knew it was going to be one of those trips that would change me forever.  I was prepared to be out of my comfort zone, I just didn’t know quite how much!

I ended up getting really, really  sick (as in almost not making it home) but through the kindness of strangers, and a few questionable medical facilities, I was able to get the help I needed to get better.  It made me appreciate my health so much more after I recovered.   It also made me realize that if I am physically well, I can handle just about anything.

If you’re curious about what happened and want to read more, here is the link to my travel blog for that trip.

Now it’s your turn–what are you most grateful for?  Tell me in the comments below or show me on instagram with the tag: #gettingtoknowyouandme

Getting To Know You + Me: What Is Your Favorite Way To Spend A Free Two Hours?

Getting To Know You + Me 2 Hours

It isn’t often these days that I have two hours of unplanned free time, but when I do?  It’s like Christmas in July.  I’m one of those people that can get a lot done when I’m super busy, but if you give me free two hours, something in me downshifts and I become a total sloth.  And I love every minute of it.

One of my favorite things to do is to read a gossip magazine.  I know, I know–It’s not one of the most accurate sources to get information but come on!  It’s so entertaining and I totally love seeing those pictures of stars being ‘just like us’.

Another thing I love to do when I have some free time is to be creative in some way.  Even if it’s just doodling or watching a youtube video from one of my favorite artist’s channels, it makes me feel calm + relaxed.

One last favorite way for me to pass the time is napping.  I am such a sleepaholic!  I accepted a long time ago that I am just one of those people that requires a lot of pillow time.  Getting a lot of sleep not only makes me feel good but also makes me a super-pleasant person to be around.  The alternative isn’t so pretty. *grin*

So there you have it, my favorite ways to pass the time.  How we pass our time says a lot about us; not good or bad, it just gives us a peek into what’s going on at that point in our life. I feel like it’s important to incorporate down time as well as productive chunks throughout the day, so I can feel balanced + fulfilled.  What about you?  Tell me your favorite ways to pass the time when you have some extra moments.
